What is a Headshot and Why do I need one?

What in the world is a headshot?

Sometimes I’m met with a very puzzled face when I say the word ‘headshot’.

More than once, people have asked, “is that a shot to the head?”

Yeah… No.

The classic headshot is a simple head & shoulders photograph typically against a plain background.

The headshot is the foundation of your business branding photo arsenal. It is the number #1, most essential, can’t live without shot to have in your branding image library, no matter what your industry is or where you’re at in your business.

If you have a limited budget, or you’re just getting started with your brand and you’re not 100% sure what type of content you need or want just yet, an updated headshot is a simple and easy place to start.

Average photographs blend together, but a good professional photo can really stand out from the crowd/ competition.

Where do I use Headshots?

Use your headshot on:

  • business cards
  • social media profile photo: Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, etc
  • LinkedIn profile photo
  • website – either your About page and/or you Contact page – although you possibly want to go further with your photos for these pages.
  • email signature
  • photo for newspaper articles or magazine articles
  • blogs
  • email newsletters
  • marketing materials such as flyers, brochures, etc.
  • signs, banners, billboards, etc.

Historically, headshots are cropped to be a 4:5 ratio and vertical, but things change. LinkedIn uses a square, either square or vertical works best on Instagram . So it’s handy to get your photo in all three aspects – vertical, horizontal and square.

A happy, smiling face is your typical goal – how you would smile when greeting a client. But maybe you are using this headshot for a book cover, and you want something more moody with a dash of drama. Do you have a variety of emotions that you want to communicate to your audience? You could possibly use a few headshots with different expressions or looks.

Does it have to be just head & shoulders? No! This is the typical, but including up to the waist can be done. Remember though, for social media and the like, only head & shoulders will show.

And, remember, it’s no longer only just about headshots any more. Your basic headshot is your number one block in building your foundation of online presence. Digging deeper- communicating and telling/showing the stories about the problems your business solves, and how you improve people’s lives by solving these problems with your product/service, might require multiple photos. Why do I need a Headshot?

You don’t get a second chance to make a good first impression, so make it a good one.

Here’s the problem – when you’re scrolling through social media, you just keep scrolling when things do not stand out.

If your photo is of poor quality, people will just keep scrolling. In this day of information overload, people don’t stop for average…or below. They stop when something catches their eye. You want your photo/s to do just this – to communicate something about yourself. To make that good first impression.
